Plan for Washington Heights Compost program!!

Devious plans to compost in Washington Heights - we need feedback

This plan is in its infancy but seems very doable for this season. Please let us know if there is a reason why this doesn’t make sense or how it can be better.

The Plan:

The large amounts of unused land, currently the domain of addicts, in Highbridge Park which runs along the east river from W.155th Street to Dyckman, seem to be the best place to house a large scale public compost system in the heights. It is removed from residential buildings, avoiding potential smell or rats problem and its presence could rejuvenate the area.

To start small, organizers of the CSA at the W.181 street collection site at Fort Washington Collegiate Church are confident that CSA participants would be wiling to help fund, build and maintain the compost program. CSA participants would be given a chance to opt into the compost program before the season start, on June 1, and pay a little extra. The funds would go to building a 3-bin system. And volunteers would cart food scraps from the weekly CSA pickup on W.181 Street to the compost bin at Highbridge Park. And while the bin would be regularly maintained by volunteers it would be open to the public for food scrap drop offs.

A compost program at Highbridge, situated within reach of so many powerful nonprofits, leaves many opportunities to expand and be taken over by a more organized operation, perhaps with a youth education and empowerment component.

  1. As a member of the 181st CSA I would be for supporting a local composting site. I think a more centralized drop off spot would be needed (closer to 181/187 and Ft Wash)if Highbridge would be the final location.
